What is Sand Casting? Sand Casting Process

Sand Casting is a traditional Casting Process that involves a series of steps to make castings. The following are the main steps of sand casting

  1. Mold production. Firstly, Make the Mold and Core Box according to the drawings of the parts. This may include Wooden Molds, Plastic Molds, or Metal Molds, depends on the production quantity and the complexity of the parts.

  2. Sand mold production. Next, place the model into the sand box and fill it with molding sand to form the shape of the casting. This step includes preparing molding sand, molding, and core making.

  3. Melting. Melt the required metal materials to liquid state. This step is usually carried out in an electric furnace to ensure that the composition and temperature of the metal  to meet the requirements.

  4. 4. Pouring. Pour the molten metal into the prepared sand mold to fill the shape of the casting. During pouring, attention should be paid to controlling the pouring temperature and speed to avoid defects in the castings.

  5. Cooling. After pouring, the casting is cooled in the sand mold until the metal is completely solidified.

  6. Sand Removal and Cleaning. After the casting cools down, it is necessary to clean up excess molding sand and core sand, and remove the sprue and riser.

  7. Processing and inspection. For castings with special requirements, extra simple machining and polishing, as well as quality inspection, may be required to ensure that the castings meet the requirements.

The above steps are the basic process of sand casting, and each step requires careful operation to ensure the quality of the final product.
